What does 2 John 1:9 mean?

Anyone who runs ahead and doesn’t stick with what Christ taught doesn’t have God. But if you stay with what Christ taught, you have both the Father and the Son. 2 John 1:9 - Modern Text Bible

(He draws a line: true connection with God comes from holding to Jesus’ teaching, not going beyond it.)

If you move past what Jesus taught, you lose your connection to God. The verse argues that sticking with what Jesus actually said and did is the only way to stay connected to what’s real. The Greek word for "teaching" is didachē, meaning instruction or doctrine, but it’s more than just information—it’s about the way of life Jesus modeled. This challenges the idea that you can pick and choose the parts of Jesus’ message that you like, or that spiritual growth means moving beyond him. Instead, the verse insists that Jesus’ teaching is the center, not just the starting point. For anyone who’s tempted to chase after new ideas or to reinvent spirituality from scratch, this verse says that real connection to God isn’t about novelty or personal preference. It’s about staying rooted in what’s true, even when it’s difficult or unfashionable.
