What does 2 Samuel 13:28 mean?

Absalom told his men, 'Watch Amnon closely. When he’s drunk and I give the signal, kill him. Don’t be afraid—I’m the one giving the order. Be strong and do it.' 2 Samuel 13:28 - Modern Text Bible

(Absalom reveals his plan for revenge, instructing his men to kill Amnon when he’s vulnerable.)

Absalom tells his servants to watch Amnon closely and, when he’s drunk, to kill him. The Hebrew word for “strike” is nakah, which means to smite or kill decisively. Absalom’s plan is cold and calculated — he uses the cover of a party to get revenge for Tamar.

This verse challenges the idea that violence only happens in obvious, angry moments. Sometimes, it’s planned quietly and carried out under the surface of normal life. Absalom’s command transforms a joyful celebration into a scene of betrayal and bloodshed.

If you’ve ever been shocked by how quickly things can turn dark, or how someone can hide their real intentions, this verse is a reminder that not everything is as it seems. Trust is fragile, and sometimes, the real danger is what you don’t see coming.
