What does 2 Samuel 19:7 mean?

'Now get up, go out there, and encourage your men. If you don’t, I swear by God, not a single one of them will stay with you tonight. That would be worse for you than anything you’ve faced since you were young.' 2 Samuel 19:7 - Modern Text Bible

(Joab warns David that if he doesn’t show appreciation to his troops, he’ll lose their loyalty, and things will get even worse for him.)

Joab tells David to get up and speak to his troops, warning that if he doesn’t, they might abandon him by nightfall. The Hebrew word for "encourage" here is chazaq (חָזַק), which means to strengthen or make strong. Joab’s advice is urgent and practical—he knows that morale is fragile, and that a leader’s presence can make all the difference. Joab makes it clear: if David doesn’t act, he risks losing everything he still has, despite his loss.

This verse challenges the idea that leadership is only about personal feelings or private grief. Sometimes, the most important thing is to show up for others, even when it’s hard. For anyone who has ever had to lead in the middle of heartbreak, or who has felt the pressure to be strong for others, this verse is a reminder that courage isn’t about not feeling pain—it’s about choosing to act for the sake of those who depend on you. Sometimes, showing up is the bravest thing you can do.
