What does 2 Samuel 22:40 mean?

You gave me the strength to fight and made my enemies collapse beneath me. 2 Samuel 22:40 - Modern Text Bible

(David credits God for his victories in battle.)

David says his strength for battle came from God, and that his enemies were made to kneel before him. The Hebrew word for “strengthened” is azar (עָזַר), which means to help or empower. David isn’t taking credit for his own power—he’s saying he was equipped with what he needed, and his opponents were subdued.

This runs counter to the modern idea that you have to be self-made or do everything on your own. In the ancient world, kings often boasted about their own might. Here, David flips that script by saying his ability to win didn’t come from himself.

If you’ve ever felt outmatched by what you’re facing, this verse suggests that sometimes, the strength you have isn’t just from your own reserves. Support can come from outside yourself—a friend, a mentor, or even a moment of unexpected courage. And sometimes, the things you’re up against lose their power over you, not because you’re suddenly stronger, but because you’re not fighting alone.
