What does 2 Samuel 3:22 mean?

Just then, Joab and David's troops came back from a raid with a lot of loot. Abner wasn't with David anymore, since David had sent him away in peace. 2 Samuel 3:22 - Modern Text Bible

(Joab and his men return to find Abner gone, unaware of the peaceful deal David just made with him.)

Joab and David’s soldiers come back from a raid, bringing lots of plunder, just after Abner has left in peace. The Hebrew word for "spoil" is shalal, meaning goods taken in battle. This verse highlights a moment of missed connection—Joab doesn’t know about the peace that’s just been made. It pushes against the idea that everyone in a group always knows or agrees with what’s happening at the top.

If you’ve ever come into a situation and felt out of the loop, or found out decisions were made without you, you’ll recognize this moment. Sometimes, timing changes everything. The verse is a reminder that even in big organizations or families, not everyone is on the same page, and that can lead to conflict down the road.
