What does 3 John 1:7 mean?
They set out to serve Jesus, and they didn’t take anything from people who don’t share our faith. 3 John 1:7 - Modern Text Bible
(The travelers are missionaries who rely on the support of believers, not outsiders, because their work is for Jesus.)
John explains that certain people have gone out to serve, not for money or recognition, but "for the sake of the Name" — meaning Jesus. The Greek word for "Name" here is onoma, which in this context means reputation, authority, or identity. These travelers refused help from outsiders, relying only on the support of those who shared their values. This verse pushes back on the idea that everything has to be transactional or for personal gain. Instead, it honors those who act out of conviction, even when it costs them. For anyone who’s ever wondered if it’s possible to do good just because it’s right, this verse says yes — and that such choices are worth supporting.
