What does Proverbs 1:15 mean?

My child, don't even set foot on their path. Stay far away from what they're doing. Proverbs 1:15 - Modern Text Bible

(The wise choice is to avoid getting involved with people who do wrong, no matter how tempting it sounds.)

Refusing to follow someone down a dangerous path is a choice that can define your life. This verse is a direct warning: don’t go along with people who are heading toward harm. The Hebrew word derekh means ‘way’ or ‘path’—not just a physical road, but a whole way of living. The advice is clear: don’t even take the first step with them.

It’s easy to underestimate how much the people around us shape our direction. The counter-cultural idea here is that loyalty or friendship isn’t a good enough reason to join in on something you know is wrong. The verse challenges the pressure to fit in, reminding us that following the crowd can lead to regret.

In real life, this might look like walking away from a group making risky choices, or saying no when friends encourage you to do something you’ll regret. You don’t have to follow others just to belong. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is step off the path everyone else is taking—and choose your own way.
