What does Proverbs 3:28 mean?
Don’t tell your neighbor, 'Come back tomorrow and I’ll help you,' if you could help them right now. Proverbs 3:28 - Modern Text Bible
(Don’t delay doing good for others when you’re able to help immediately; don’t put off kindness.)
Don’t tell someone to come back later if you can help them now. The verse claims that when you have the resources to meet a need, you shouldn’t delay or make someone wait. The Hebrew word for give here is natan, which means to hand over, to actively provide—not just to promise or intend.
This challenges the habit of procrastination or making empty promises. In both ancient and modern worlds, people often say, “I’ll help you tomorrow,” but never follow through. The verse insists that real goodness is immediate and practical—it doesn’t put off what can be done right away.
If you find yourself tempted to delay helping someone—whether out of busyness, discomfort, or uncertainty—this verse is a push to act now. Even small acts of generosity can make a real difference when they’re timely. Don’t wait for the perfect moment; use what you have, when you have it.
