What does Proverbs 3:7 mean?

Don’t think you’ve got it all figured out. Respect God and turn away from what’s wrong. Proverbs 3:7 - Modern Text Bible

(Humility and a healthy respect for God help you avoid mistakes and bad choices.)

Thinking you're always right or have all the answers is a trap. The Hebrew word for "wise" here is chakam, which means skillful or clever, but the warning is about being "wise in your own eyes"—overestimating your own insight. The verse also says to "turn away from evil," which means actively avoiding choices you know are wrong, not just passively hoping for the best.

This challenges the modern tendency to trust only yourself or to act like you don't need help. It suggests that real wisdom starts with humility—knowing you don't know everything and being willing to learn or change course.

If you've ever messed up because you ignored advice or thought you couldn't be wrong, this verse is a reality check. Staying open to correction and being honest about your blind spots can save you a lot of pain and help you grow.
