What does 1 John 5:18 mean?

We know that anyone born of God doesn’t keep on sinning. The one born of God protects them, and the evil one can’t get to them. 1 John 5:18 - Modern Text Bible

(People who belong to God don’t live in a pattern of sin, because Jesus keeps them safe from the devil’s grip.)

Anyone truly connected to God stops making a habit of doing wrong. The phrase ‘born of God’ uses the Greek word gennaō, meaning to be given new life or a new start. This verse claims that those who have this new start don’t keep repeating the same destructive patterns. Even more, it says that God actively protects them—the evil one can’t take hold of them in the end.

This runs against the belief that people can never change, or that once you’ve messed up, you’re stuck. Instead, it insists real change is possible, and that people aren’t just left to fight their worst impulses alone.

If you’re struggling to break free from something that keeps pulling you back, this verse offers hope that you’re not fighting by yourself. It says you can become someone new, and that you’re not defined by your past or by what tries to drag you down.
