What does 2 Samuel 22:5 mean?

'When I was drowning in waves of death, and destruction was pulling me under,' 2 Samuel 22:5 - Modern Text Bible

(David remembers feeling overwhelmed and close to death, using the image of being swept away by deadly waters.)

David describes being surrounded by the waves of death, as if he’s drowning in trouble. The Hebrew word nachal (נַחַל), meaning 'torrent' or 'flood,' paints a picture of being swept away by forces too strong to fight.

It’s surprising how raw and honest this is. Instead of hiding his fear, David uses the language of panic and overwhelm. This challenges the idea that strong people never feel out of control. Even heroes can feel like they’re drowning.

If you’ve ever felt like life is too much, like you’re barely keeping your head above water, you’re not alone. Naming those feelings is a step toward surviving them. Sometimes, just admitting you’re overwhelmed is the bravest thing you can do.
